Many clients ask me, “why did you name your law firm MAVEN® ”
When I first decided to open my law firm in 2013, I went through the same process my clients do when they are considering the launch of their own businesses. I asked myself, “What am I going to call my business? Do I go the traditional route and just open a law firm using my last name? What name communicates the message I am trying to send about my passion for this work?” While I love my last name, I wanted to be express more creativity in my practice. I wanted to use a brand that communicated all of the things that I find important in client’s selection of a law firm partner – trust, experience, innovation, and simplicity. After all, I am in the business of branding. That is at the core of who I am, what I do, and what I love to do – and for me, there is no better way to understand the needs of my clients from a branding perspective, than to be a brand owner myself.
Once I decided to brand my firm, I went through the next steps of selecting several different names, figuring out which ones matched my specialty, which ones were available, and which ones I felt connected to. At the time, I was reading a book called The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell and in it he describes different kinds of business people, each with a rare set of social gifts. He described “mavens” as information specialists and people we rely on to connect us with new information. In the book, he claims that “Mavens” accumulate knowledge and know how to share it with others. The word resonated with me and not only seemed fitting for my practice but described who I am and who I aspire to be for my clients.
So here we are, 6 years later, and MAVEN® IP continues to symbolize our expertise in our own little niche.
